  • According to the Agricultural Outlook 2021-2030 report by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the avocado is expected to become the second most traded tropical fruit by 2030, after the banana. Globally, the most traded avocado varieties include Hass, Fuerte, Ettinger, and Pinkerton.

Mexico, the main consumer

In 2021, reports from Statistica indicated that Mexico continued to be the leading consumer of avocados, with a consumption of 8.1 kg per capita. On the other hand, in the United States, a decrease in per capita consumption was observed, falling from 4.1 kg to 3.8 kg in 2020. However, the U.S. market absorbed record volumes of avocados in 2021, reaching 1.32 million tons, driven by consumers seeking healthy and versatile options, the global economic recovery, and increased activity in the food service sector.

Europe on the rise

According to preliminary figures from FRUITROP, avocado consumption in the EU27+United Kingdom increased by approximately 8% in 2021, reaching nearly 720,000 tons, surpassing the performance of the United States, which recorded a 4% increase. At country level, France remained at the forefront, with a 4% increase in consumption compared to 2020.

According to the CBI

in 2021, the average consumption in Europe was approximately 1.33 kg per capita, while in the United States and Canada, it was 3.8 kg and 2.5 kg, respectively. Mexico, the world’s largest avocado producer in 2021, consumed between 6.5 and 7 kg per capita. Finally, Scandinavia and France had the highest per capita consumption rates, but the most notable growth was observed in countries where consumption is still relatively low, such as Germany, Italy, and Eastern Europe.
